The Accuracy of a Treated Studio
The Accuracy of a Treated Studio – Hearing the Truth
In 2026, music is consumed on everything from high-end home theaters to R100 earbuds. For a master to “translate”—meaning it sounds correct on all these systems—the engineer must be able to hear the audio without any interference from the room itself. Most home studios suffer from acoustic bias: the room’s shape and surfaces “lie” to you by hiding bass frequencies or exaggerating harsh highs.
At Mahogany Recording Studio, our mastering suite on Plattekloof Hill is a surgically treated environment. We have removed the “room” from the equation so that the only thing we hear is your music in its purest form.
1. Neutral Frequency Response
Untreated rooms often have “standing waves” that cause certain bass notes to sound twice as loud as others. If an engineer masters in that room, they might turn down the bass in your song, making it sound “thin” everywhere else.
-
The Goal: A “flat” response where every frequency from $20\text{ Hz}$ to $20\text{ kHz}$ is represented accurately.
-
The Choice: We use high-density bass traps and broadband absorption to ensure the low-end is tight, punchy, and honest.
2. Eliminating Phase Smearing
When sound bounces off a side wall or a desk before hitting the engineer’s ears, it creates “early reflections” that ruin the stereo image.
-
The Goal: Pinpoint accuracy in the stereo field. You should be able to “point” to exactly where the vocal or snare sits in the 3D space.
-
The Choice: Our studio layout is designed with specific “reflection-free zones,” ensuring the engineer only hears the direct sound from our reference monitors.
3. Reference Monitoring (The Honest Mirror)
We don’t use “pretty-sounding” speakers. We use high-resolution reference monitors designed to reveal flaws.
-
The Value: If there is a tiny click, a harsh vocal frequency, or a muddy sub-bass issue, we will hear it and fix it before it reaches your fans.
